Meclizine
At the onset of a vertiginous episode, Meclizine can be appropriate to help prevent dehydration and falling. Once the acute phase has passed, continued use can hinder recovery. Vestibular therapy can begin early, teaching patients how to stabilize and progressing to teach compensation. Anti-dizziness medication interferes with this process.
With Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), anti-dizziness medications provide little to no benefit and will not fix the problem. Additionally, Meclizine can cause lethargy and dizziness, creating additional symptoms for your patients.
A general rule of thumb, if your patient is dizzy when he/she is still, medication is typically advocated for the first few days.
