Vertigo
The question we hear so often is "Do you all treat vertigo"? The answer is yes we do! The problem is, lots of people claim to treat vertigo, but do not always have the proper equipment or experience. The question we wish we would hear more often is, "Do you have the proper equipment and experience to diagnose my condition?" or "Do you have experience working with vertigo?" The answer to both of these questions for us is still Yes.
A large number of our patients have had vertigo treated previously by a number of other healthcare providers. Many have spent thousands of dollars being treated and have only had mixed results. Many vertigo patients are either misdiagnosed or under-diagnosed. Additionally, it is important to understand vertigo is a symptom, not a diagnosis. For example, pulling a muscle in your back causes back pain. Back pain is the symptom. The source of the symptom is due to a pulled muscle which is the proper diagnosis.
We highly recommend that when you shop for a provider to treat your vertigo, you ask the following questions:
1. Do you own VNG testing equipment or at least Infrared Video Frenzel Goggles?
2. When diagnosing Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), do you perform Video Head Impulse Testing or at least know how to identify which of the 6 canals (3 in each ear) are involved?
3. Do you treat other vestibular disorders besides Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)?
4. Do you have advanced training in diagnosing & treating vestibular disorders?
Video Frenzel goggles use infra red lighting and video recording to correctly identify the structure creating the nystagmus, a type of abnormal eye movement. The image of the eye is enlarged and viewed on a monitor for more accurate and detailed viewing. The direction and type of nystagmus allows for accurate diagnosis. Some vestibular testing can only be done when the patient does not have the ability to fixate on a target which is only possible in the dark. The goggles allow for the patient to be in darkness while the therapist can still view the eyes, without turning out the lights. Additionally, the video is recorded allowing for repeat viewing by the therapist and the patient. Patients will better understand why they have symptoms when they can view their own video of nystagmus and a knowledgeable provider explains what is happening.
If you are seeking Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT), be sure to choose a provider with the right credentials, the right experience, and the right tools & technology properly diagnosis your condition before attempting to treat your condition.
